I was wondering if any of the advertisements, commericals, leaflets etc make any difference to expats when they go shopping. Seeing as we are all in a new country it is hard to know what is the best product to buy or the best shop. Sure we can ask or do the trial and error thing but just how much does advertising influence you?
September 26, 2005 at 4:10 pm #1617adminKeymasterI always check out the flyers for the Billa and Bippa, as well as the Hofer and Emma and whatever other little grocery store there is in my neighborhood just to get an idea of whats on sale before I shop. I don’t usually shop all of them but if they have a good sale on something in particular I use I’ll drop by. But then it seems like if one has something on sale -like coffee for instance, then the Billa will too.
On the other hand all those do-it-yourself harware store flyers go straight into the recycling. I would only look if I happened to be thinking about new flooring or something. Same with all the furniture places. I don’t need to be tempted by stuff I don’t need and don’t have the money for anyway. But when we first moved here I poured over them all because I wanted to do so much to our appartment and I was curious about what the Europeans had to offer. “Sigh”, maybe next year.

(For example, I’ll go to Spar to pick up the sale cereal and to Zielpunkt to pick up the sale yogurt.) Looking at the flyers is the only way to save any money on groceries here.
I miss coupons from America that came in Sunday papers usually and where you could use the product discount at any grocery store. (It would be like having a coupon for, say, 50 cents off of Kelly’s chips and beign able to use that coupon at Spar or Billa or Merkur or wherever Kelly’s are sold.)
Most of the other ads are thrown immediately in the recycling bin.
September 27, 2005 at 2:45 pm #1619AmberMemberThere is a website http://www.gutschein.at that has coupons but I am not sure how useful they are.
September 27, 2005 at 3:14 pm #1620ViennamomMemberThe gutschein site would be useful if there was a place listed that you go to (for example, if the pizzeria in your district had a 2-for-1 deal or something.)
What I’m meaning are coupons you can use in any shop for a particular product. Is America the only country that has this or do they have this in other places as well?
September 27, 2005 at 3:54 pm #1621AmberMemberThey have them in the UK too. They also have them here but I am not sure how people get them. I know that if you are a ‘friend of merkur’ you sometimes get coupons in the post. I am sure I have seen them in magazines from time to time as well. However I don’t think coupons are all that popular here unless it is just one of those things that the Austrians haven’t caught onto yet.
September 27, 2005 at 9:10 pm #1622SilviaMemberI know Billa has a vorteil card (sort of a discount card) you can get to save money and I think other grocery stores offer some sort of plan that is about the same. It might be worth checking out.
Sites are in German only.

They use your normal bank card as ID to give you discounts and points. I guess this saves them money as they don’t have to make cards for everyone and I think it is handy because then you don’t have all these cards taking up space in your wallet/purse.
I signed up for the ‘friends of merkur’ the other day (my boyfriend signed up a while ago but I am the one who usually does the shopping) and all they did was put my card in the normal payment machine took my details and I was signed up!
