I am amazed after finally getting the internet connection at home, that there appears to be no English language newspaper in Vienna. Maybe I am wrong?
So far, the only one which comes close is the Webster University publication called “Vienna Review” and even this seems as rare as hens teeth. It appears to be rather ‘high-brow’, and judging from the little I have read online, it seems to have literary aspirations, rather than be a newspaper providing English speaking people with information which is relevant to their lives.
I have a feeling that there are some other writers out there in Virtual Viennaland. Would anyone else like to put their heads together and think about starting one and/or maybe contributing to one, if started?
Guess a good start would be asking how many English speakers there are residing in Vienna/Austria? Not sure how I would find this out, so maybe someone could point me in the right direction?

No time/$$ to start one, but would certainly be open to finding out where these papers must be hidden–anything else online? Wasn’t there something called Vienna Today? Is that not around anymore?

Im a South African moving to Austria on a work permit. I came across this website today while trying to find out more about Vienna. Im disappointed to read that there is no english news papers. If I may ask what internet service provider do u use. Do u have internet connection through out the day and what is the monthly instalment. There is no way I can be without news if there is no news paper.
Austria definitely needs an English speaking newsapaper – AustriaToday is OK but the stories are very short indeed, even with a subscription.

I just wonder though, generally, as more people are turning to the web for news, whether or not anyone can justify backing a printed version of an English paper. Even if it was there, would you buy it regularly? I am not sure the number of expats here justifies producing this. In Spain, both German speaking and English speaking expats get their own newspapers printed daily but the number of people there buying it there justifies its cost. If it costs €1 people will pay it, can you see that happening here?
Those Spanish papers have local advertising and real actual stories – if you take AustriaToday and derStandard.at you will find very few stories that are the same.
I wonder if a better option might be to chase a British newspaper and get them to start printing locally, like they do in Spain also – at least the news would be up-to-date and not a day old for 3 euros.
i agree. it would be nice if there is an English-language Austrian newspaper. Wiener Zeitung offers an english version but the news are shorter, more like a blotter, than a story. To compensate for that I read Der Spiegel. it offers much better analyses on what’s happening to the German-speaking countries and the rest of Europe. Of course, it rarely talks about Austria.
I also think this is a good idea. I once saw a Chinese guy at the ubahn reading a chinese newspaper. I thought it was just something imported from their homeland or something (Well you never know). But then out of boredom I looked at him again and the newspaper (I think) is being printed here – because I saw an advertisement of something (chinese characters, you know), and the address is actually here in Vienna (the address was printed using normal letters). If they actually manage to keep something like that going, then probably an English newspaper could also be a success.
I’ve been reading this thread with fascination. I plan to move to Vienna at the beginning of 2009 for at least a year, and will of course be looking for work.
I’ve been a journalist for 10 years (writer/editor/occasional photographer), and spent a lot of that time in an English-language daily in a non-English speaking country, so any devlopments along these lines would be of great interest to me.
I’m not looking to make a fortune in my first 12 months in Vienna, just enough to get myself and my missus by without a major struggle.
I speak rudimentary German, but that should be much better by the end of 2008.If anyone is aware of any openings, I’d greatly appreciate if you’d let me know, either through this forum or by PM.

There is an English language newspaper in Vienna. Its called the Vienna Review and it is published out of Webster University, tho it no longer is just a university paper, it is independent. It should be available at major train stations. You can also subscribe here:

They have had more then one. Austria Today being the last one I believe.
I doubt I would buy an English language newspaper unless it was a an English version of something like the Kurrier or the Diepresse. Something that gives you a version of the news geared towards the country you are living in. Real news, not the Expat hype type papers which have a tendancy to report “What’s on! instead of “what is really going on”.
That would be largely along the lines of a publication I spent several years with, Silvia. We found it got a large local student readership, because they were able to read English versions of stories they were already familiar with and were relevant to them.
