FYI
Health Insurance for Non-Austrians
Any person, regardless of citizenship, who wants to take up residence in Austria, must be covered by some health insurance plan that covers full medical treatment in Austria.
Those interested in joining the health insurance plan under the Austrian system should apply to the Health Insurance Agency (“Gebietskrankenkasse”) in the province (“Bundesland”) where they reside.
The monthly premium is approximately € 350. The premium may be increased if and when Austrian social security contributions are raised. The premium may be reduced in case of individual hardship.
As health insurance coverage will start six months after joining the health insurance plan and in view of the fact that full health insurance coverage is a prerequisite for obtaining an Austrian visa, American citizens wishing to take up residence in Austria are advised to make appropriate arrangements well ahead in time.
Further information may be obtained from the appropriate “Gebietskrankenkasse.” Inquiries should be directed to the office as listed below:

I am finding that there are International Health Insurance policies available for MUCH less than 350 Euros/month … people should definitely shop around.

But it also depends on what you are earning. When I first got it this my payments were only 87 EURO a month!
When shopping around also make sure to compare apple to apple of what you get and what you have to pay out of pocket.
August 8, 2011 at 8:08 pm #1971blueorangeMemberI don’t think it depends on how much you are earning. the key factors are:
– age
– Gender
– occupation
– habits
– preconditionsFor example, for women before 35-40 it is quite a bit cheaper than for 40+. Because there is a 25% chance of getting a desease that will diminish her ability to work full-time after the age of 45…

Wissen Sie eigentlich, dass Ihr Sozialversicherungsbeitrag nur von Ihrem Einkommen abhängt?

October 1, 2012 at 12:32 pm #2261viennatimMemberLook through the policies and think what will happen if you need to deal with the ins. Co…. who handles the claim? Late payments may cancel policy cover depending on where policy is issued. Usually you can get cheap 24hr. accident cover as an add on…. and so on… its not just about how much it costs….
🙄 🙄October 1, 2012 at 4:49 pm #2264elginneMemberThanks for posting this.
I’m dealing with a similar situation. My husband (American) and I (Austrian) want to move back to Austria next year. Even for me as an Austrian citizen, there’s that 6-month wait until the benefits actually kick in, since I’ve been away from Austria for so long.
If anyone has got experience with any particular international insurance provider, I’d be grateful if you posted the names.
Thanks a lot! -
