Hello, I am sure this would have been covered before but I suppose I would like to know the latest information that you may have. Can anyone tell me the easiest/cheapest/most reliable way to get UK TV channels in Austria. Is it possible to get them on satellite or cable and, if so, with which provider? I am finding it a bit difficult to get the info I need on the net. Thanks in advance.
August 30, 2012 at 6:58 pm #2186madmanMemberI’ve heard that you can get it by Telecom Austria broadband, i have not tryed this by the way
August 31, 2012 at 7:33 am #2189LuvwinesMemberTelekom Austria aka A1 only has BBC News and BBC “Entertainment”
http://www.a1.net/tv/sender same with UPC.There is a method of bringing a sky box and subscription from the UK and connecting it to a rather large dish but it is fairly costly to setup.
Cheapest solution is to pay for a UK proxy (5 quid a month) which will give you a fast UK IP address where you can watch TV online. You can even hook a computer up to a flat screen for example.
August 31, 2012 at 1:17 pm #2190anagramParticipantjno is the expert on this matter, here is an article he wrote for VV some years back:

He can probably comment on whether or not it is still accurate.
August 31, 2012 at 4:36 pm #2193GrumpyexpatMemberThanks a million for your answers, I was hoping it would be a bit more straight forward and legal 🙂 They are really turning up the heat regarding downloading tv programs in the UK. Closing down torrent sites etc. Its a pity you cannot pay to view directly from BBC/ITV websites.
August 31, 2012 at 6:30 pm #2194jnoParticipantDear Mr Grumpy .. satellite – best send me a PM and we can have a chat on the dog about this. I could explain things here but it would take an age.
Alternatively, go for viewing through the inet with a UK proxy – personally I don’t do this as I have never found it 100% reliable and picture quality will always be a bit staggered depending on your inet connection, which can be hit or miss – however if you can live with this then it is fine.
Ok, satellite is also not 100% reliable in a storm, but whatever inet connection I’ve had, sat is just simpler after the initial set-up of course. An HD box from Sky UK will still get you a fair few number of channels in English even with a 60cm dish, but as always, this is “subject to change”.
Whichever method you choose, having been here so long now, I have to say the quality of UK TV is seriously going down hill fast – depressing news or the Simon Cowell channel. Even without BBC, I am not really missing UK TV so much any more because the majority of it is a pile of you know what (and I run a website for a very popular UK TV show myself).
At the end of the day, it all depends on what you want to watch, how technically savvy you are, how you want to watch things and how much you are willing to fork out.
PM me if you wanna chat about sat setups – jno
August 31, 2012 at 6:37 pm #2195anagramParticipantI’ve never gone down the satellite route because I’ve always been a great fan of downloading British TV shows via torrent sites. As grumpyexpat says the main one closed down last week, much to my annoyance. There is one other still out there which I really hope sticks around.

you mean the four sided object one? yes, its great but what I cannot find on there I get from isoh*nt. Torrent will always win the day somewhere, in fact this is REAL “TV on Demand” – only watch the progs you want to see, without any ads.
I really dont see what the issue is with sharing UK TV stuff once its broadcast – if a relative recorded it for me back in the UK and posted me the VHS tape, or a DVD-RW or USB stick full of recorded telly, is this any different? YouTube has more TV on it than anything else!
August 31, 2012 at 6:55 pm #2197anagramParticipantYes that’s the one. Of course the surprising thing about UKN’s closure was that they had always prided themselves on being ethical, i.e. not carrying any shows which had been or were about to be released on DVD. As it turned out this ethical stance counted for naught with FACT.
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the analogy of sharing an old VHS tape. The TV channels however would probably point to the possible loss of future revenue as the main issue. The argument runs that overseas channels are less likely to purchase say EastEnders for example from the BBC if they know that potential viewers won’t tune in because they are already downloading it. This argument seems pretty poor to me because the percentage of torrenters compared to non-torrenters must be minuscule.
September 1, 2012 at 11:24 am #2198chefsmithMemberI get by with a combo of downloading and filmon.com
filmon is free in SD and a decent enough stream or for 14 euro per month, you get HD and a stronger stream.
I link the ipad to the tv with a special cable.
Most tv shows are available the next day, and I use Vuze which is foolproof.
Its obviously not the same as having a British sky set up, but It does me fine.
September 2, 2012 at 3:53 pm #2200jnoParticipantIn many ways the filmon option is probably better than sky as there is probably more choice. The only fear with filmon is longevity and reliability on a third party provider. Channels have come and gone with filmon in the past+ you need reliable internet+decent knowledge to connect to TV. I would say Sky is more tried and trusted, but even there channels have come and gone and set up initially is arguably as problematic.
September 3, 2012 at 5:12 pm #2202chefsmithMemberThe core british channels on filmon seem to be very dependable, and also the mbc / mbc 2 and mbc action is all in English from the arabic section….
There is an offer that if you pay for a years upfront you get a decent gift or discount, this months is a device for ipad that will stream directly to your tv wirelessly ( think itrip for ipods through the radio) for free.
I’ll avoid this, as you said, it’s not 100 % dependable and I feel the law could close this site down at some stage, therefore I prefer to pay monthly, commitment free through paypal……..
September 3, 2012 at 6:10 pm #2203WienAMemberHey chef Have you noticed a problem with your Vuze downloads. Im on A1 And I noticed they seem to be stifling the downloads.
Crap, I need to look at other options methinks.

I only use Vuze courtesy of old bud chef, but with this isoh, do you just search for the TV programme you are interested and then download it?
