Hey everyone, I’m tossing the idea around to get a car. If I get one, it would be a tiny little car, like a smart. Does anyone know of any estimates on the monthly/yearly cost of auto insurance for something like that?
I’ve had my license for 12 years in the US with never a ticket or accident, if that matters to the Austrian insurance companies.
:danke:

But just to give a totally rough number based on my experience and what I hear from others (not on scientific data!) – for a full Kasko, for a new car – Something around 120-150 per month. They also differ by insurer.
August 8, 2012 at 11:25 am #2132lovelight15MemberThanks blueorage! But wow that’s a lot! That’s not worth it at all, jeez! I am a 28 year old woman, perfect vision, university degree, non-risker taker blah blah π
Considering my boyfriend has a car and really I just want one because I miss driving and having a convertable, I definitely do not want to be paying more than 60 euros a month for insurance.
Does anyone else have any other (hopefully lower!) estimates? What about for a moped?
August 8, 2012 at 11:37 am #2133blueorangeMemberI would not advise to have own a car here if you have to pay for everything yourself – the police became totally fierce, they give you fines for anything and everything, there are so many restrictions. 30 min. parking is now 1 Euro! , Wrong parking – 34 Euro, Gas – 1.5 Euro per liter, garage, repairs. Everything is against drivers these days.
You can have half-insurance, but then you have to pay for your own damages.
Cars are for people who can afford just burning money…
August 8, 2012 at 1:13 pm #2134SilviaMemberMaybe car sharing would work for you! Get a car once in awhile for fun and give it back when you have had your fix… π
August 8, 2012 at 1:15 pm #2135lovelight15MemberI agree with you that it is expensive, and my boyfriend’s company pays for his car and all the expenses, and that is very nice.
But we are moving to the 19th (which I’m soo happy about because of all the green, such a difference from the 7th) and according to the public transportation site, it will be 40 minutes to my work. With a car it would take 14. Of course traffic changes things, but the times I’ve driven myself to work I just come in at 9:30 and leave at 19:30 or 20 and there’s never been any traffic to speak of. That’s an hour a day saved… so… it’s very tempting.
I think at the very very least there is a moped in my future π
August 8, 2012 at 3:52 pm #2136goldfishMemberCar insurance is extremely uncompetitive and expensive in Austria. This is precisely why my husband and I only own one car. Our insurance is third party and does not cover fire and theft. We pay about 60 Euros a month. Yes the police love to stop and fine you for everything imaginable or if you are unlucky send you the fine in the post, that way you are not in a position to dispute it.
I’ve been stopped for driving too fast and for driving too slow (I am not joking)
August 9, 2012 at 9:17 pm #2140AudryMemberHi, I sent you a PM a few days ago. I have a Smart Car and have had it for 7 years here. ( I also live in the 7th). I love having a car, feeling the freedom to just get in and go where I want!! I have not had the problems that the others have. My insurance is only 26 a month. It was 30 when I first got the car, and has gone down every year I have it. Maybe because of the size of a Smart…what matters is the age of the car and the size of the engine, and of course that you don’t have a bad record here in Europe. Anyway, I love my car, what people say about Smarties is so untrue. They are safe, they have lots of storage room in the back, and they are automatic trans., easy parking, easy on gas ( 22 euro to fill it…) I get to Villach on a 22 euro tank of gas, no kidding. I have to sell it because I am leaving. But believe me, if I could take it with me I would. If you want to try it, give me a call. I am asking only 2,500 for it which includes new winter tires I paid 400 euro for last year. Maybe we can transfer the insurance over and it stays at only 26 a month…I am not sure. my nu. 0680 238 2788.
August 9, 2012 at 9:20 pm #2141AudryMemberLovelite…a moped is great…but in the winter???? The car has heat!
August 9, 2012 at 10:22 pm #2142blueorangeMemberwow – 26 per month! who is your insurer?
August 10, 2012 at 8:12 am #2144jpillMemberyou can always go and check with ΓΆamtc which is the equivalent of AAA over here. they are normally very helpful and can tell you all the details. height of amount you pay is depending on horsepower of the car as well as some other details. so of course a smart is a lot cheaper than a porsche. you can choose between the mandatory insurance and comprehensive cover where the insurance takes care of all the expenses, even if you cause the accident (of course the premium will go up then). you can also ask insurance brokers for a quote. i have always been driving in vienna and could not do without π
August 10, 2012 at 2:37 pm #2148harshmodeMemberIf you just want to have an alternative to public transport from time to time, you could try out car2go – http://www.car2go.com
Basically you register with them, get a member card (no membership fee) and pay per minute for use of their network of Smart cars, which are distributed throughout Vienna (and a number of other cities worldwide). You can download an app for iPhone or Android which shows you the location of the nearest cars, and you can unlock them with your membership card. Then just drive away, and park wherever you want within their area of operation.
August 10, 2012 at 6:26 pm #2149blueorangeMemberI looked at their Prices and Insurance and it looked a bit risky to me. It was 500 self-payment in case of damage:) There was a 10 Euro register fee too. But the idea is good. Has anyone actually used it?

One of my coworkers used it to drive to the airport instead of calling a cab. She said it cost 15 euro for the whole thing (from IZD tower to airport, you can leave the car at the airport). She seemed pretty satisfied, and had done it a couple of times before.
August 14, 2012 at 12:56 pm #2157harshmodeMemberI tried it out for a short trip to the city and liked it. The fact that you can park anywhere and end your rental at any time is pretty good. It seems to be gaining in popularity – I keep seeing the cars driving around.
