Never heard that term in New York, USA either
I’ve heard the term “wifebeater” for that kind of shirt. I think it’s a term more used in the American Midwest and South.
As for the original topic, I have one of those portable AC units and it is a godsend. When it’s hot I sleep much better with that thing running. I have it in one room and then have a fan in the doorway and it brings the cool air into the next room. The AC units used to be more expensive but I noticed that they seem to have gone down in price.
We have wifebeaters here in California but it goes more with the homeboy, lowrider type of style. It includes black baggy pants, nice shoes, shaved head and lots of tatoos. Oh and also being able to spell out your side of town with your fingers (gang lanuage). If you are a female with a wifebeater you should have your hair winged to the sides and your eyebrows should be shaved and drawn back on about an inch higher than where the natural eyebrow line is. As far as cooling off, I was using my air-conditioner all the time until I just received my $500 dollar bill for last month! I have my own private pool so I might start dipping in there a little more.
