I read an article somewhere a while back about a little known fact regarding the Austrian E-Card.
Which is if you’ve been paying into the healthcare system for 2 or more years that one can request to get all those tiny circular dots on the back of the e-card “filled in ” with numbers or codes which would then allaw you to seek medical treatment outside of Austria should you need it.. in other words, your E-Card would be accepted outside of Austria (but within EU countries).
Can someone please shed light on this ? I am in my second year and would like to get the card changed to reflect this reality.Cheers

March 18, 2013 at 2:08 pm #25081on1Memberbtw i just did my second residency permit (the 1 year permit), so i’ve officially been here total two years..

Ok i just realized that the reason i didnt see an expiration date on the e-card is because its just dotted out and there was no year..i guess i will have to call them and ask when my two year anniversary is so i can request an e-card with all the info filled in on the back.
Also, does anyone know if the e-card ( ie e-card wwith the back info filled in) will actually work if you need medical attention overseas ? If so, will it work for outside the EU ?
any additional heads up is cheerfully accepted.

e-Card only works in EU-EEA countries. Heads up that you may want to check for each country. It’s been awhile but several years ago I discovered the fluke that because I am a non EU-EEA citizen I would not be covered in Switzerland with my e-card. It was ok for that particular situation as I was right on the border not far from Austria and Italy– so I could have gotten to one of those countries had I needed any sort of medical treatment– but it might be something to check into. I think the situation with that has changed– but my advice is to know before you go.
For some things outside fo the Eu-EEA they will reimburse you part of what the same thing would cost in Austria. For example, I prefer my American dentist to the dentists I have tried here. I get a bill and turn it in to the Krankenkasse. It’s a pittance what I get back but something is better than nothing.
