Unfortunately, I was sick and missed the tax discussion at the Expat Center, so I am hoping for your help on a few questions.
I moved here in June 2012 to live with my Austrian husband. I have not been able to find a job yet, so I have no income to report. All of the information I find seems to be directed to people with salaries and investments. My plan is to file a US Tax Return and report zero income, but here is my real question… Do I just file as Married, Filing Separately? I read something confusing about it being better to include info about my husband’s income, just in case we decide to move back to the US someday.
I am in no position to hire a tax attorney, especially when I have no income to report – haha. I will probably end up calling the IRS directly, but hoped to check with you good people first.
Thanks so much!
You do not have to file if you did not work here unless you worked in the US until June 2012, then you file on that income.
U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad
If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, the rules for filing income, estate, and gift tax returns and paying estimated tax are generally the same whether you are in the United States or abroad. Your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you reside.

Even though you are required to file, there is no penalty on not filing if you didn’t earn enough for the IRS to tax… whatever it is now 85-90k / yr
Thanks so much for your help!
